The Reintegration Academy
was founded in 2009. The program has hosted nine cohorts: 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020 (two cohorts). The program brings 35-40 formerly incarcerated participants to the college campus for 8 weeks. These individuals are screened by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's Southern Region. Participants are immersed in academic, life skills, and career development modules. On the first day of the program each participant receives a meal card and a gift card (to purchase business casual clothes). In the 5th week each participant receives a free laptop computer. In the 6th week, all participants are registered into a local community college and are assisted with completing financial aid forms. During the 8th week, the program hosts a job fair for the participants--inviting 20 local employers to meet, greet, and interview participants. The program focuses on jobs in the following fields: Health Sciences, Supply Chain Logistics, Construction, Horticulture, Plumbing, Truck Driving, Solar Panel Technology, and Mechanics. At the graduation banquet, each participant receives a Certificate of Completion. The Reintegration Academy helps to create a "Prison-to-School Pipeline." Each successful Reintegration Academy cohort of 35 participants saves the state of California $1.3 million.
